Fiddling While the World Burns? Why Video is the Fire Hose Your Climate Change Communication Needs

Let’s get it out of the way. With alarming headlines about heatwaves in the Midlands and flash floods down south, how can we, a video production company, have the cheek to be talking about video for climate change communication? As filmmakers, shouldn’t we just quietly get out of the way whilst the real experts get on with saving the world?

Video for climate change communication

It’s a fair question. But we’d argue the complete opposite.

It’s precisely because the stakes are so high that storytelling isn’t just a “nice-to-have”—it’s an essential tool in your arsenal. You, the brilliant minds in our climate science, net zero, and sustainability sectors, are doing the critical work. You’re creating the roadmaps, developing the technology, and providing the data we desperately need.

But here’s the problem: for the most part, the public isn’t listening.

We’re Losing the Storytelling War on Climate Change

You’ve likely felt the frustration. You publish a groundbreaking report or develop an innovative solution, and the response is… a polite nod. The data is clear, the science is irrefutable, but it isn’t translating into the widespread, urgent behavioural change we need.

Why? Because facts inform, but they rarely inspire. For decades, the climate narrative has been one of graphs, statistics, and distant, apocalyptic warnings. This can lead to what psychologists call “psychic numbing,” where people become so overwhelmed by the scale of the problem that they simply switch off (Slovic, 2007). The data points become background noise.

And let’s not forget who we are up against here. Big oil, mass consumerism and climate deniers who have very deep pockets to push their own agendas and interests.

To accelerate climate action, we have to stop just trying to win the argument. We have to win hearts and minds. And that’s where we come in, by providing video as a tool for climate change communication.

Beyond the Bar Chart: Swapping Data for Empathy

Imagine trying to explain the concept of love using only a chemical equation. You’d have the facts right, but you’d miss the entire point. An infographic showing tonnes of CO₂ saved is informative. A 90-second climate change communication video showing a grandfather teaching his granddaughter how to plant a tree in a newly rewilded local park—a park made possible by a new sustainability initiative—is unforgettable.

This is the power of video. It bypasses the analytical part of the brain and connects on a fundamental human level. It translates your work from the abstract to the emotionally resonant. We need to create empathetic content that helps people see a version of a sustainable future they want to live in, not one they feel forced to endure.

We need to show, not just tell. Let’s show:

  • The pride on a factory worker’s face as they install a cutting-edge piece of green tech.
  • The relief of a family whose energy bills have been slashed thanks to a community insulation scheme.
  • The simple, quiet joy of someone cycling to work on a safe, greenway, leaving the traffic jam behind.

From Your Lab to Their Living Room

You are the expert on the “what” and the “how.” Our job is to be the expert translators. We partner with climate professionals like you to find the human story at the heart of your work. We take your complex, vital research and transform it into a narrative that can be understood, felt, and shared by everyone.

Think of us as the bridge between your peer-reviewed paper and the public consciousness. Whether it’s a short documentary, a compelling social media clip, or an animated explainer, we shape your science into a story that can’t be ignored.

What Kinds of Climate Change Communication Videos Can We Create?

“Video” is a broad term, but different styles can achieve different goals for your climate message:

  • Documentary-Style Case Studies: Let’s put a human face on your work. We can visit a community benefiting from your green energy project or follow a family trialling a new sustainable product. These mini-docs provide powerful social proof.
  • Animated Explainers: Got a complex scientific concept or a tricky bit of policy to unpack? Animation is brilliant for simplifying the complex. We can make carbon capture or the circular economy easy to grasp and visually engaging.
  • Social Media Shorts: To capture attention on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn, you need punchy, compelling content. Think quick myth-busting videos, inspiring snippets of real-world action, or a 30-second summary of a key research finding.
  • “Aspirational Future” Films: These are a bit more cinematic. They paint a picture of what a greener, more sustainable UK could look like. The goal here is to inspire hope and create a tangible vision that people feel motivated to work towards.

What Makes a Climate Change Communication Video?

Not all videos are created equal. A great one that actually nudges behaviour does three things exceptionally well:

  1. It’s Relatable, Not Preachy: The hero of the story shouldn’t be a scientist in a lab coat; it should be someone the audience sees themselves in. A parent, a homeowner, a commuter. The video should show them overcoming a challenge the audience also faces.
  2. It Frames the Gain, Not Just the Loss: Instead of focusing solely on what we’ll lose to climate change, effective videos highlight what we stand to gain from sustainable action: cleaner air, stronger communities, better health, and even saving a bit of cash. It’s about aspiration, not just desperation.
  3. It Has a Simple, Clear ‘Next Step’: The viewer is left feeling inspired—now what? A great video doesn’t just present a problem; it offers a clear, manageable call to action. This could be anything from “visit this website to calculate your home’s energy score” to “ask your local MP about green transport.” It makes the next step feel easy.

And the Million-Pound Question: How Much Does it Cost?

This is a bit like asking “how much does a house cost?“. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on what you want to build. A simple animated explainer will cost significantly less than a full-scale documentary filmed across multiple locations.

The key factors that influence the budget are the video’s style, its length, and the complexity of the production (e.g., actors, locations, visual effects).

But don’t let the thought of a “Hollywood budget” put you off. A clever concept and a strong story are far more important than blockbuster special effects. The most effective approach is to start with your goal and your message, and then we can work with you to design a video that fits your budget. Think of it as an investment in making your vital work count.
